Wolsong low and intermediate level radioactive waste disposal center
It is Korea's only low and intermediate level radioactive waste disposal facility located in Bonggil-ri, Munmudaewang-myeon, Gyeongju-si, Korea. Construction began on November 9, 2007, and the planned first phase was completed in June 2014, with a completion ceremony held on August 28, 2015. Dispose of mid- and low-level waste with low radiation content, such as work clothes, gloves, and parts used at nuclear power plants. Built on an area of approximately 2.1 million m², the scale is 100,000 drums in the first stage based on 200 liter drums, and the total storage capacity is planned to be 800,000 drums. The disposal method is cave disposal and the period of use is 50 years. The entrance to the disposal facility is 30m above the water, making it safe from tsunamis, and the six silos where waste is stored are designed to withstand an earthquake of magnitude 6.5.
